Get back on track when things go sideways. Ironman 4x4 winches are built to handle the grunt work when you're stuck, bogged or braving rough terrain. With electric 4x4 winches ready to haul, you’ll have the pulling power to recover with confidence, no matter where you end up.
How to Choose the Right Winch for Your 4x4
When it comes to recovery gear, a reliable winch is often the difference between calling for help and getting out under your own steam. Here’s a practical breakdown to help you choose the right winch for your setup:
Know Your Vehicle’s GVM
Match your winch capacity to your vehicle’s gross vehicle mass (GVM). As a rule of thumb, aim for a winch with a minimum rating of 1.5 times your GVM. For most 4WDs, a 9,000 to 12,000lb winch is suitable. Going too small risks burning out your motor, while going too large may be unnecessary bulk.
Decide on the Rope Type
- Steel Cable: Steel rope winches are as tough as they come; low maintenance and a line that is resistant to damage in the harshest conditions.
- Synthetic Rope: Synthetic ropes are a fantastic alternative to steel rope as they are lighter and more pliable, which makes them easier to handle and operate in a recovery situation. The rope is designed to float and also reduce the weight on the front of your vehicle
Electrical Setup Matters
Ensure your dual battery system and alternator can support the load. Running a winch draws high current, and under-spec setups risk electrical faults or sluggish performance. It’s worth checking with an auto sparky to confirm your rig is wired to cope with recovery demands.
Winch Control Options
Ironman 4x4 winches come with both wired and wireless remotes. Wireless offers more freedom, while a wired backup is useful if you're working in wet or low-signal environments. Having both on hand gives you flexibility and peace of mind in unpredictable conditions.
Ironman 4x4 winches Submersible To 1 Metre.
With an IP68 rating, the winch can be submerged to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes without water getting into the mechanics. That means that you can drive through rivers until your heart’s content, knowing that your winch will be just fine!
