Know Your Vehicle’s GVM

Match your winch capacity to your vehicle’s gross vehicle mass (GVM). As a rule of thumb, aim for a winch with a minimum rating of 1.5 times your GVM. For most 4WDs, a 9,000 to 12,000lb winch is suitable. Going too small risks burning out your motor, while going too large may be unnecessary bulk.

Decide on the Rope Type

• Steel Cable: Steel rope winches are as tough as they come; low maintenance and a line that is resistant to damage in the harshest conditions.
